NUM members down tools at Anglo Coal’s Kleinkopje colliery

Members of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) stopped working at Anglo American's Kleinkopje coal mine in Mpumalanga on Wednesday, demanding the removal of the general manager.

They claimed the manager has made several changes without consulting with the union. "All the changes he made must be reversed and the consultation process must commence," the NUM said in a statement. NUM spokesperson Livhuwani Mammburu confirmed to Reuters that workers were on strike, but could not say when the strike had begun or how many miners were involved. The union cited several issues under dispute, including recruitment procedures, placement of a health and safety representative, bonus pay and other restructuring processes.
