Unisa undecided about contract workers

University of South Africa (Unisa) has yet to decide on the way forward with regard to about 2,000 jobs that are affected by the new Labour Relations Amendment Act.

The Act stipulates that staff members who are employed on a contract basis for longer than three months yet whose jobs are of a permanent nature should be afforded permanent employment.  The Academic and Professional Staff Association (Apsa) believes that Unisa is trying to avoid adhering to the law.  General Secretary of Apsa, Boitumelo Senokoane, said:  “Unisa should hire workers directly, not through labour brokers and use that money to pay the workers”.  Unisa spokesperson Martin Romotshela was unavailable for comment.
