South Africa is faced with many challenges in the teaching, training and education professions today. Much is attributed to poor curriculum design and incompetent teachers/trainers. Part of the problem emanates from the lack of informal learning strategies where learners are not involved, bored, uninterested and constipated by the one-way knowledge information piled onto them by the teacher, trainer or presenter.

Widening the net

The American Society for Training and Development call it Human Performance Improvement, the International Society of Performance Improvement, call it Human Performance Technology and many other authors have coined other meaningful descriptors. There are formal certifications and even advanced degrees that focus on this. Yet, practically, what does this mean for the learning leader trying to balance budget, quality and measurement of a meaningful organisational learning and development strategy?
